Ubuntu Linux CD  You can either boot a live CD or install it to the local drive. It has a fairly decent DB of drivers, so you most likely won’t have major issues with graphics or NIC drivers, etc. It can be loaded as a dual boot on a machine with Windows based OS, even on a single partition. Whether you boot the live CD or load the OS to disk, it comes bundled with Firefox, OpenOffice, text editors, games and many system tools. The entire package can be downloaded as an ISO and fits on a single CD.  http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Foxit Reader  It’s free, and infinitely lighter than Adobe Reader.  It utilizes tabs (like IE), and doesn’t bug you every 15 seconds to update it.
